D-Factory lost access to 140 TB of creative assets when both drive volumes on the company’s Synology NAS suddenly went offline. Customer services representatives from Synology spent two weeks attempting a remote recovery before referring D-Factory to seek professional data recovery.

D-Factory is a high-end digital capture and postproduction company located in Los Angeles with additional locations in New York and Paris. The company offers a wide array of digital services for clients that include individual photographers as well as major corporate brands.
D-Factory faced a critical operational disruption when both drive volumes on their Synology DS2415 NAS unexpectedly went offline, cutting off access to 140 TB of irreplaceable creative assets. The 23-drive RAID 5 array, configured in SHR mode and running macOS, housed the company's entire digital production library. After two weeks of unsuccessful remote recovery attempts by Synology's support team, D-Factory required a more advanced solution to restore business continuity.
Secure Data Recovery Services' RAID repair and recovery department delivered a custom solution for D-Factory's failed Synology NAS. Following a thorough diagnostic analysis, engineers identified read and reallocation errors, unstable drive heads, lost RAID configuration, damaged partitions, boot sector corruption, and file system damage across three of the 23 drives.
After performing precision repairs to the affected drive heads, all drives were successfully imaged in a Class 10 ISO 4 certified cleanroom. The development team then rebuilt the original volume architecture, de-striped the RAID array, and manually extracted and repaired all user data before securely exporting the recovered files to Secure Data Recovery Services' protected servers.
Our expert technicians were able to restore 99% of D-Factory’s lost data from the failed Synology NAS – more than 12 million files for a total of more than 120 TB of data critical to the continuity of the company’s business operations. All data was transferred to customer-supplied drives before returning to D-Factory.
From single external hard drives, SSD’s, mobile devices to enterprise NAS, SAN, and RAID failures, we are ready to help recover from digital disasters, anywhere.
