When First Quantum Minerals experienced a power outage that shut down their data center, the impact extended far beyond the loss of power. The 12-disk RAID array within a Dell VNXe3150 suffered multiple disk failures, preventing a successful rebuild. Due to the sensitivity of the data, Dell support recommended contacting a professional data recovery provider.
Secure Data Recovery Services engineers took possession of the 12 Seagate hard drives and conducted a thorough cleanroom diagnostic, identifying several read errors and severe logical damage within the corrupt array. The 12-disk RAID 5 held 4 of 9 LUNs that made up the overall VMware file system — a complex structure consisting of 52 low-level RAID arrays combined into 4 multi-terabyte volumes.
Engineers assembled each array separately to reconstruct the volumes and extracted the 4 LUNs as binary replica files for datastore reassembly. The remaining 5 LUNs were cloned remotely, and the VMFS volume was manually reconstructed. Upon further inspection, the VMware volume required additional manual repair and deduplication to fully restore the data.
Secure Data Recovery Services' R&D engineers developed a custom set of proprietary tools to address the complex file system damage compounded by deduplication — successfully recovering First Quantum Minerals' critical data after a global competitor had deemed recovery impossible.
Using a combination of industry standard and newly developed proprietary tools, Secure Data Recovery Services engineers were able to recover the entire data set, consisting of 10 million files in 27 TBs, that were successfully reintroduced into First Quantum Minerals' network.
